Featured artists from Dominance
Whatsup y'all. Here's a brief profile on each artist who performed at Dominance.
Yannick
From the streets of Cape Town Yannick, The Rap Mechanic, serves as yet more hard evidence that the Cape is not in short supply when it comes to talented hip hop artists. With the ability to wow crowds armed with thought provoking content and sublime punch-lines. His signature anthem, Blaze, has caught many by surprise. With the genius Leo Large on production, it’s only a matter of time before major radio stations have this track rotating indefinitely. Yannick, the Rap Mechanic has arrived, he’s about to give this rap game a bit of an overhaul. It’s best the masses buckle up, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
Qalazive
He is undoubtedly one of the most influential artists to come out of PE, he has been referred to as a social commentator, touching on issues such as God, prostitution, gangsterism and Africa. This is what sets him apart from most cats in the game and makes him relevant to South Africa’s socio/political context. He is yet to release an album however his mixtape Amagqabantshintshi has got great reviews getting 4/5 stars on the HYPE magazine. He has a remarkable stage presence even though most of his content is in IsiXhosa you would not help but bump to his music, especially the song “If you feel me” currently making its rounds on radio. Qala is one of the few artists out their who could change the South African hip hop scene, he is definitely set to wow the masses.
DJ I.D (Intelligent Design)
Hailing form Tennessee (USA) DJ I.D came to Cape Town in 2007, initially he came to carry out development projects using hip hop as a medium, and started up a non-profit organization called ConsciousFlowz. Not only is he a DJ but he’s a socially responsible business man making a significant impact to the South African landscape.
If you’re a hip hop lover and reside in Cape Town then you definitely have heard about Kool Out Live or the Kool Out Lounge (KOL). Then you should also know that DJ I.D is the (KOL)Originator , KOL emerged from the perceived lack of quality Hip Hop on long street. KOL provided for a chilled, loungy hip hop vibe, and has become a premier spot for Cape Town hip hop.
Ill (Illiterate) Skillz
This rap duo currently runs Cape Town hip hop, they are possibly the most recognized rap crew to come out of Cape Town. They have an ever growing fan base not only in South Africa but in Europe. The duo is comprised of Jimmy Flexx and Uno July aka Tommy Jinks. If Cape Town is regarded as the Mecca of South African hip hop, then we could probably equate their meteoric rise to that of NY’s pioneer hip hop crew RUN DMC. Their music is relevant and representative of the South African context with songs like “Peace and War”, they also genuinely appeal to the Urban city slicker with songs like “Coolest in the City”. These cats definitely have the winning formula with DJ I.D on decks consolidating their reputation as the hottest live performing acts in Cape Town. We all know how hip hop has become synonymous with fashion, thanks to their Nikey and Headhoncho endorsement deals they remain the Coolest and Freshest in the City.
